Never been a fan of Reagan. Never understood the adulation otherwise sane conservatives reserve for him. If you scan through his list of 'achievements' - taking the national debt to stellar proportions, wasting billions on Star Wars, Iran Contra, giving bin Laden his big break in Afghanistan, etc. - there's not much to justify the Reagan worship. Now there's nuclear-armed Pakistan to add to the list:
"The only good thing the United States did for us was to look the other way about an atomic bomb when it suited the United States to do so."
Says a retired senior Pakistani intelligence officer. Adds Jonathan Schwarz at Tiny Revolution:
"And there's more: the Pakistani bomb was probably funded by Saudi Arabia, just as the Iraqi nuclear program was during the nineteen eighties. The Reagan administration was aware of it in both instances, but had other priorities."
Never understood why Eisenhower isn't revered by wingnuts instead. Even being a liberal, I'd cite Eisenhower as one of the best US presidents of modern times. But Reagan? Err... nope.
Cons say he ended the Cold War and presided over a booming economy. They ignore the fact that neither event was directly related to his policies.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I've always said that Reagan was one of America's biggest traitors . . . then Bush/Cheney came along.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, compared the them, Reagan aint so bad. Compared to them he's like a tough old curmudgeon senile uncle.
