The Real Tea Party Game Changer

Glenn Beck weighs in on the Occupy Wall Street protests:

“The violent left is coming to our streets, all of our streets, to smash, to tear down, to kill, to bankrupt, and destroy,” Beck said. “It will be global in its natural and global in its scope.”

Hearing Glenn Beck he-MSing about "the violent left" makes me worry...

How so?

Well, if the entire right wing runs on fear and needs a regular supply of things to be scared of (gays, Muslims, Liberals, etc.) will the Occupy Wall Street movement inadvertently boost the right by providing it with raw material? Will the rubes be prompted into worrying about 'barbarians at the gates' and add the OWS to their ever-growing hate list?

Maybe not.

I might be going out on a limb, but I'd guess even the 'baggers ain't dumb enough to fall for re-targeted rich guy panic indefinitely. At the end of the day, the hicks know they ain't really members of the Koch country club. And, as class war picks up speed, they'll be forced to jump and pick a side. Right now, our reactionary proletariat might dismiss the OWS protesters as hippies and anarchists and say mean stuff about commies and unions in the news site comment sections. But soon, real soon, they'll begin seeing their own kids, their own unemployed in-laws, their own parents... and, eventually, themselves amongst those crowds. Then the whole game will change.

Damn. This might just be what us progs have been waiting for for decades: an end to cognitive dissonance amongst the 'Merican proles and an awakening "we've been had" moment. Let's hope...

So my final thought: Occupy Wall Street is like the Beatles, the Tea Party are the corporately-created Monkees. I predict we'll be seeing 'baggers wake up and defect to the real populist movement as it keeps growing. And, if Beck's panicky rant is anything to go by, the corporatists who think they own everything must be thinking that too and p*ssing their Armani pants at the thought of losing their tame sheeple.

  2. Not holding my breath waiting for the baggers to experience their awakening. Far more likely they will just use it to define another powerless group to hate on at the behest of their astro turf masters.
Once you have elevated stupid to a religion, admitting you have wasted your whole life regurgitating bullshit ceases to be an option.
