Signs of The Dumbpocalypse

According to Asian News International, polls reveal that a whopping one in four Americans have no clue which country the United States declared independence from. Weirdly, six percent thought it was either France, China, Japan, Mexico, and Spain.

There's also another of those open-mic episodes making Republicans look seedier for preying on our collective dumbness: Michael Steele caught on tape calling the decade-long occupation of Afghanistan "a war of Obama's choosing". Dumb yes. But scarier yet, he was actually briefing GOP operatives to push the "Obama invaded Afghanistan" meme to distract attention from the vote-losing fact that the GOP is the party of George W. Bush. Are we really judged so stupid enough that that could be deemed a workable strategy??? Like... OMG.

But topping the list of Signs of The Dumbpocalypse has to be news that Glenn Beck is starting a university:

"Beck University is a unique academic experience bringing together experts in the fields of religion, American history and economics."

I have no words. If this is the level to which our nation has sunk, maybe we should throw in the towel and retract our declaration of independence from France.

Will The Republican Establishment Please Stand Up?

Everybody in the GOP is running scared of the Tea Party like it's their deranged Frankenstein monster they've lost control of. And they're really falling over themselves trying to dodge being labeled 'establishment' by the media because that word makes the monster very angry.

Even Michael Steele, RNC head and by definition as establishment as they come, is feigning 'rogue'. Said he to Neil Cavuto on F-oxymoron News:

"Have you been reading my press lately? The last thing you can say about me is that I'm part of the establishment...Please do not mix the Republican party establishment -- I don't know who that is by the way."

"You! You! You! You, you, you, you, you," exclaimed Cavuto.

Unlike those denizens of the Glenn Beck wing of the Republican nuthouse, I do believe in empathy. Gotta feel sorry for Steele... just a little. Maybe a scintilla..? Nah. F*ck it. Throw him to the monster.

Straight From The Horse's Mouth

During one of his trademark bouts of accidental candor Michael Steele admitted that black people "really don't have a reason" to vote for the GOP.

True of course. But then would anyone aside from Wall Street bankers or health insurance CEOs have any reason to support those pr*cks anyway? In the words of Michael Jackson, "It Don't Matter If You're Black Or White".

So let's just ponder the implied surrealism of Steele leading a party that he admits he has no reason to vote for. Far out...

Micheal Steele, dauntless proponent of Republican Hip Hop values, has a book out.

It's a straight-to-landfill tome entitled "Right Now: A 12-Step Program For Defeating The Obama Agenda".

Shouldn't this pile of crap be more properly entitled "Right Now: A 12-Step Program For Denying the Democratic Will of The American People Who Elected Barack Obama by a Landslide Majority"?

Just what is the fetid mystery meat contained within Steele's mango-pit-shaped head? I'd call him an idiot but I'd probably get hate mail from the American Association of Idiots. And deserve it.

Today's Micheal Steele Accuracy Rating: Cheap compass over Bermuda Triangle verging on blind Ted Nugent.

So the wingnut meatwads are all happy they gained a couple of governors. MC Steele said (prior to the New jersey result), "The Republican party's overwhelming victory in Virginia is a blow to President Obama and the Democrat party".

Is it f***, numbnuts.

But what about the eerie Repub silence on the real judgment that was made last night? That one where they lost a seat that's been solidly Republican since 1907? Yup. The rational, everyday residents of NY-23 watched the Palin/Limbaugh/Beck limp biscuit game and declined to eat what was passed to them.

I'm guessing Doug Hoffman's loss was a big judgment on the wingnuts and the 9-12 knuckle draggers, a big judgment on the moribund GOP, and a big judgment on the clueless tools in charge who seem to think relaying messages for Palin/Limbaugh/Beck constitutes leadership.

Palin/Limbaugh/Beck: pack up your carpetbags and skedaddle to your next failure. And don't forget to take monkey boy Hoffman with you.

MC Steele Plays the Race Card

Michael Steele hates people who 'play the race card'. But if 'playing the race card' means deliberately exploiting racial sensitivities by making unjustified claims of racism against opponents, he just proved he can play it with alacrity.

On his recent Univision interview he claimed that he was "called an Uncle Tom by leading Democrats" and that Steny Hoyer called him a "slave."

As David Wiegel at The Washington Independent points out, you can't seriously accuse leading Democrats of calling you 'Uncle Tom' unless, by leading Democrats, you mean a few liberal bloggers with poor judgment.

Then there's the 'slave' accusation he threw at Hoyer. What Hoyer actually said was that Steele had made a "career of slavishly supporting the Republican Party." Maybe a tad inappropriate when 'servilely' would have sufficed, but it's in no way equivalent to actually calling him a slave.

Truly, Michael Steele is more full of s*** than a Taco Bell bathroom.

Michael Steele: Slap-headed Cretin

Michael Steele continues to impress with his sage pronouncements:

"I don't think we need a comprehensive overhaul of our health care system."

Hopefully, this could also be translated as "I don't think the Republican party needs to win any elections for the next generation or so." Steele also describes the American healthcare system as the "best in the country." Where the f*** did they find this guy???

Michael Steele: Iconoclast or Dumbass?

Michael Steele is saying some crazy s*** these days. He's either self-satirizing in a subtle bid to reach hipster intellectuals. Or he's a dumbass. Because it's hard to tell either way, he's like the human equivalent of 'Dancing With The Stars'. Or Sarah Palin.

Referring to the healthcare vote, Steele recently asked "Can we all get in a room and have a Rodney King moment..?" Is he suggesting the Senate be beaten within an inch of their lives by the LAPD? Probably not what he had in mind. But if it was, he'd get my vote.

Then on Wednesday, after a Fox anchor said the health care reform train has "already left the station," Steele said "Well, I'm the cow on the tracks. You're gonna have to stop that train to get this cow off the track to move forward."

As Julie Farby says "Apparently, Mr. Steele is unschooled in the storied history of train/cow confrontations." Or is he just going over our heads?

GOP Web Site Goes For Laughs

Even after her embarrassing "what papers do you read?" Couric debacle, Sarah Palin appears proudly and defiantly to have learned nothing.

The new GOP Web site says a lot more about the true nature of the Republican party than they would have liked. Marc Ambinder presents "Top Ten Reasons Why The GOP Website Relaunch Is Fizzlin'":

1. In a section devoted to "future leaders," there were none.
2. In the subsequent rush to get up a "future leaders" page, they choose "you."
3. The last GOP accomplishment cited on the accomplishment page was from 2004.
4. The what's up page -- hip! starts with this sentence: "the internet has been around for a while now"
5. Administrator passwords were accidentally posted.
6. When the RNC hosted a kick-off conference call, the website was down.
7. The website cites Jackie Robinson as a GOP hero. Robinson wasn't a GOPer, and he criticized the GOP on race. Robinson left the party because of its views on race. He had been, as a reader points out, a Republican for many years.
8. The first question on the conference call was from an Hispanic Republican who asked why the GOP site didn't have a Spanish-language page and noted that the White House had one.
9. Bragging about web redesigns is so 2004.
10. It's not timed with the start of any major advocacy campaign -- or political campaign. And it portrays itself as something it's not: diverse and ready to embrace new ideas. That may be what the party leadership aspires to, but, at least when it comes to diversity, a few pictures of Hispanics and African Americans doesn't make up for ... well, the history of the party.

Apart from all that, we're cool.

As a side note, am I alone in finding the Republican penchant for trumpeting century-old achievements intellectually disingenuous? True, the Republicans were the black folks' party back in the 19th century, hence the African-American flavor of the GOP's "Republican Heroes" page. But at a time when the southern 'Dixiecrats' were effectively the political arm of the KKK, this would be like the German Communist party boasting they had more Jewish supporters than the Nazis.

Are we really dumb enough to assume the RNC and the DNC represent the same ideas they did 100, 50 or even 20 years ago? Apparently, Michael Steele hopes we are.
