On Religion & Separation Anxiety

I have a separation of religion and politics rule when it comes to my beliefs or lack thereof. I prefer not to put my cards on the table and I'm quite happy if people assume I'm a Godless heathen. Jimmy Carter, the conservative anti-Christ,  taught me that.

I remember watching Carter talking about his faith during the height of the 'Bush theocracy'. The interviewer asked him if he, like Bush, had looked to God for guidance when he was president. Nope said Carter. Even though he was a Christian, he said he never let religion inform his decisions as president. Why? Because he would have made himself a leader who could not be argued with, an ayatollah representing "the inviolable word of God" who could never have let things like compromise, pragmatism or admitting he was wrong get in the way. For Carter, religion and politics was a dangerous mix to be avoided. And if that's good enough for the 39th president of the USA, that's good enough for me.

But for conservatives? Hell, short-circuiting democracy with religion has been their winning strategy for decades. Basically, you can't disagree with them because they're representing God's law and He's never wrong... for Republican congressmen, Saudi kings and Taliban Mullahs alike, religion saves a lot of time that would otherwise be wasted on debate.

And they aren't even content co-opting Christianity as is, they go further. Because God doesn't always jibe with their id, they excise large parts of the Bible and retool many of Christ's most basic teachings to fit with those of the true prophets: Ayn Rand and William F. Buckley. Like with charity. Here's Bill O'Reilly's typically conservative take on that:

"[B]eing a Christian, I know that while Jesus promoted charity at the highest level, he was not self-destructive. The Lord helps those who help themselves. Does he not?"

Errm... no. While the Old Testament was all about punishment, revenge, explosions... basically God played by Chuck Norris, the NT is entirely more troublesome for conservatives. Christ is all about teaching unselfish, unconditional love for humanity by example -- even to the extent of getting himself crucified for our sins as an unequivocal statement of principle. At least you'd think it would be unequivocal... Wouldn't you Bill? What more could a guy do to get his point across..?

It's always amazing to think the same teachings that inspire people to renounce materialism and devote their lives to helping the poor supposedly inspire conservatives like Bill O'Reilly too. How does this work? In O'Reilly world, Mother Theresa would probably have toured the slums of Calcutta in a Mercedes yelling at the poor to get off their lazy asses and get jobs. Albert Schweitzer would have been demanding market-appropriate co-pays from African lepers and Christ himself would have rain-checked the last supper because he "was not self-destructive".

Like Gingrich, Beck and Palin, Bill O'Reilly proves the rule: the louder someone yells about being a Christian, the less they really seem to have a clue what one is. And for that, if nothing else, I'm quite happy for conservatives to assume I'm an atheist because I'd sure as hell never be their kind of Christian.

Jennifer Aniston v. Bill O'Reilly

After Bill O'Reilly blustered about Jennifer Aniston's decision to get herself inseminated and raise a kid solo, she responded with:

Many women dream of finding Prince Charming (with fatherly instincts), but for those who've not yet found their Bill O'Reilly, I'm just glad science has provided a few other options.

Ha! Nice passive aggressive burn. But... oh no... I'm getting that unpleasant sinking feeling again like I might be agreeing with Bill O'Reilly. I'm sorry but...

How f*cking infuriating it is that she champions single motherhood as some kind of noble choice when it's mostly just an unwanted and desperate situation forced on millions by the vicissitudes of poverty. Poor moms can't afford the nannies, PAs and various helpers Aniston will have to make single motherhood bearable. Poor moms don't do this stuff with the luxury of choice like Aniston. Poor moms don't do this because they're too picky to keep a guy around. F*ck this sh*t. I'm sick of women with wealth and privilege extolling the everyday privations of poor moms as feminist virtues. If you work three jobs and raise your kids alone, you should not be celebrated. You should be helped and the society that you live in needs to seriously reassess its priorities.

WTF?! of The Day

Whatever happened to the Mighty Douche?

Says Bill O'Reilly:

"President Obama has the power to stop this 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' business. Just sign an executive order. I don't know why it's taking so long—it's not fair. We should stop this nonsense."

Man, the Falafellator is making himself harder to hate these days. What with the pro-working man stance, advocating universal healthcare, ragging on Palin and now this... Roger Ailes must dream of smothering him with a pillow while he sleeps. I remember when Bill O'Reilly was more Don't Ask, Just Yell. WTF?!

Bill O's Back

Bill O'Reilly seems to have been on the down-low since the murder of George Tiller last year. Could it be that Bill was given pause for thought after his incautious words were implicated in encouraging "pro-lifers" to kill? I don't know.

But after a recent on-air owning of Sarah Palin, it would seem he's back on form. Sure, Palin's a f*cking moron... but even so, the grace and skill with which Bill demolished her was a glory to behold. To paraphrase:

O'Reilly: So you oppose amnesty for undocumented workers and would send them all home?

Palin: Yup.

O'Reilly: So as a start you'd have all undocumented workers register with the feds so we know who they are and where they are?

Palin: Yup.

O'Reilly: And you'd send the ones who refuse home?

Palin: Yup.

O'Reilly: And let the ones who register go to work because you can't just starve them to death?

Palin: Err... yup.

There you go. Bill takes Mooselini from "No Amnesty" to "Amnesty" in about three sweet chess moves. This is the form that makes him tower head and shoulders above other Fox(ymoron News) neanderthals like Beck or Steve "dookie stick" Doocy. Give that man a falafel!

Bill O'Reilly Mellowing With Age Like a Fine Wine... Kinda

No more Mr Angry. Meet the new, mellow Bill O'Reilly...

Bill O'Reilly is no longer the shouty fascist sex pervert of old. Apparently, he's settling into a new role as Fox News' 'elder statesman' and is happy that Glenn Beck's now overtaken him as arch liberal hate figure. "I'm just a human meat shield for the guy," responds Beck.

According to Amy Sohnen
, an O'Reilly producer:

"You may not see the vein explode anymore." O'Reilly even says he likes Obama.

Bye bye, mighty Falafellator. If we must endure wingnut blowhards spouting crap on TV as part of the great cosmic balance, you'll be missed as one of the best. Glenn Beck has some very large, sweaty shoes to fill.

Bring On The Loons

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Mark Potok was on O'Reilly's show yesterday talking about the Oathkeepers:

O'REILLY: Is there one group in America right now that you guys believe is dangerous, is growing fast, and that the folks should know about?

POTOK: [T]hese men and women are animated by the idea that, you know, foreign forces are about to come into this country and put us under martial law and throw us all into concentration camps, I think there is a certain danger associated with that.

O'REILLY: All right. Well, it's certainly not rational.

POTOK: They're operating on the basis on crazy theories that may cause one of them to draw a gun one day.

O'REILLY: All right. You know what I'm going to do, Mr. Potok? Because it's a very interesting topic. I'm going to invite somebody from the Oath Keepers to come on the Factor tomorrow and give forth their point of view.

So... O'Reilly says "it's certainly not rational" then, in the next breath, promises to invite them onto his show to "give forth their point of view". Because that's what you do when you're Fox News. Right?

Bill O'Reilly's Lost Cause

Bill O'Reilly whined earlier this week about how the mainstream media was biased against the Tea Party movement because "they like to look down on the folks." Unlike those Real Americans at Fox of course...

It's hard for me to admit... but sometimes I almost like Bill O'Reilly. Kinda... He advocated universal healthcare and, even if it comes from a place of self-serving hypocrisy, he at least makes a show of sticking up for working folks. So how come he can't see the Teaparty for what it is and warn his viewers it's just another corporatist scam designed to redistribute even more wealth upwards?

Obama Win

Today's 'Presidential Question Time' in Baltimore was something to behold. That Obama would volunteer to stand up and take questions from 140 GOP'ers on their own field is pretty f*cking amazing.

Better yet, thanks to his razor brain and Rain Man-like memory for minutia, he aced it. Now the wingnuts must stop cracking dumb about teleprompters. Obama showed he can run intellectual circles round those mental midgets right off the cuff. Man, he did so well he 's pobably looking totally Swedish to Chris Matthews by now.

More good news from a very weird source: According to Bill O'Reilly's latest online poll 94% of his viewers give Obama an 'A' grade for his first year in office.

How can 364,905 Bill O'Reilly viewers be wrong? Well... you know what I mean.

Mooselini Debuts On Fox

Roll up! roll up! The wingnut circus is in town... Bill O'Reilly debuts Palin on Fox!

So Bill wheels out the old "why do liberals fear and hate you so much?" clown car. "I have no idea," shrugs Palin full of bewilderment more fake than a bucket of water full of confetti.

Speaking for the entire Palin-hating majority, allow me to clear up the confusion. The reason she is universally loathed outside of the Roger Ailes big top is very simple. Even an O'Reilly viewer could grasp it if only they could be magically transported back to being seven years old sitting on their parent's knee:

"You see, Billy, not everybody's nice. There are some people who pretend to be nice so people like them, but they're not. You'll run into these people as you go through life. They might pretend to be good, but all they do is lie and cheat to get their way. So be careful out there son."

I guess the kind of folks who fall for Palin's act never got that primer.

Help. I Like O'Reilly Today...

I can't help propping Bill O'Reilly for this exchange he had with Palin. They're talking about her shambolic 'what do you read?' interview with Katie Couric:

Palin: I think if most normal Americans were put in the same position that I was there, they'd probably look at her and have that proverbial eye roll and say are you kidding me?

O'Reilly: If they knew.

Palin: Are you suggesting that I don't read?

Thanks Bill! (Don't worry, I'll get back to hating you tomorrow.)

Bill O'Reilly v. Rap: A Decade of Beef

In the Red corner, we have loud-mouthed cartoonish stereotypes holding back their own community, inspiring gangsterish gun violence, misogynism and making mega bank off their wannabe fans. And in the blue corner, we have the rappers... Mediaite.com presents "A Decade Of Bill O’Reilly Hip-Hop Feuds".

Bill O'Reilly Beats Personal Best

Bill O'Reilly has outdone his personal best with this quote:

"I don’t care about the Constitution!"

And I thought he couldn't do better than this:

"We can't kill all the Muslims. So we wanna win as many hearts and minds of good moderate Muslims as we can."

I guess the old man's under a lot of pressure from Glenn Beck nipping at his heels these days and the competition to be the most outrageous buffoon on Fox is getting tough. But as Bush Jr. would say, never misunderestimate O'Reilly.

Bill O'Reilly v. SpongeBob SquarePants

Bill O'Reilly has crowned himself 'The Cable King' for pulling in more than three million viewers but:

"On the other hand, coming in with about a million more viewers during the same time frame is SpongeBob SquarePants. Does this make SpongeBob the 'Cable Emperor'?

It’s additionally worth noting that if O’Reilly pulls in a little more than a million viewers, this means that roughly 99 percent of the population is not watching his show."

Perhaps that's why Roger Ailes' RNC PAC is so desperate to portray itself as a news channel. Without the cover of being 'news', they'd just be the less popular alternative to Cartoon Network.
