Arizona Über Alles!

Jonah Goldberg: defender of the indefensible.

In a column titled "Arizona's ugly but necessary immigration law" wingnut asspiece Jonah Goldberg defends Arizona's Stasi-style anti-immigrant laws. Goldberg starts with:

"Worries about expanding government power have to be balanced against the economic, social and environmental costs to the state."

Economic costs? How about the multi-billion dollar hit Arizona will take thanks to the various boycotts the bill has provoked? It's no small deal when tourism and trade with Mexico is effectively curtailed and state reps in neighboring California call on the governor to "sever the state's economic ties with Arizona".

The Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association has also said six organizations have canceled conventions in the state and activists are calling on fans to stop attending Arizona Diamondbacks games and buying merchandise. Yup, a great economic move there, Jonah.

But maybe I'm missing the bigger picture. Maybe the bill isn't as dumb as I think. After all, what better way to stem illegal immigration than making Arizona such a sh*tty place to live that no-one wants to go there? Bravo, Arizona!
