This snap from CPAC 2010 got me thinking. As a liberal, I should be all anti-gun and outraged by the terrorist stylings of the banner (is it Jim Gilchrist's Minute Men? Is it Hamas? Not sure). But, really, I don't give a f*ck.
My opinion on guns amounts to have 'em if it makes you happy. Guns don't offend this liberal. What does offend me is the hypocritical use of the word 'right'. Ever notice how ideologues on both sides like to use that word for stuff they approve of while denying 'right status' to anything they don't like? Abuse of the word 'right' is the secular equivalent of 'God's will' - just shorthand for 'you can't argue with me'.
Do we have inalienable rights? Are we born with the automatic right to expect anything? If you're a wingnut, you have the right to bear arms and preach sedition against (non-Republican) governments. But, oddly, the same wingnut would deny my 'right' to access healthcare, education for my kids and the 'right' not to be spied on, tortured or discriminated against by own government as part of the whole "Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness" deal.
So what gives, wingnuts? We either have rights or we don't. Don't be picking and choosing the ones you like and denying mine. Not everything is fair game for partisan warfare. Some things, like rights, apply to all and should transcend politics. Support my rights as itemized above and I'll be only too happy to attend your next Second Amendment rally and teabag with the best of them.
But until then don't be pissing on my shoes and telling me it's raining. Don't expect me to speak up in support of your Freudian obsession with guns when you don't give a sh*t if my kid gets to see a doctor or not when he's sick. It's classic quid-pro-quo. Rights should be what unites us as a society - not a list of suggestions we can pick or choose and use as a wedge to divide ourselves.

Well said Herb. I agree completely. I've got guns and I like to shoot 'em. In fact, my uber liberal son and his girl who both work for major leftist organizations, the first thing they want to do when they get out at the farm is shoot guns.

I've had guns all my life and NEVER have my rights been infringed upon. In fact, the only gun control legislation in the past few decades has been the Brady bill passed by republicans.
This issue is why the right wing is so obviously bat shit crazy.
I too have had guns for a long time. California does have tighter restrictions on them than other states but, contrary to the deafening screams from the wingnuts the last time gun laws were passed here, I did not feel like my "rights" were being taken away just because I cannot use a 30 round detachable clip on my assault rifle anymore.

ReplyDeleteI was on a boat going from Haifa to Athens after working there for a couple months. It was a three day trip and I just camped out on the deck instead of getting a cabin because I was broke. As luck would have it, a group of 25 Israeli girls were also camping out on the deck. They were on their way to Greece to let loose for a week before they started their military service. They literally had crates off beer and booze with them, some of the smallest clothes I've ever seen, and were on the hunt for guys to party with. It was a magical three days.
