Moral Courage?

At least some American evangelicals are openly opposing the 'hang the gays' bill being deliberated by the Ugandan parliament that they helped to get going. Rick Warren has now decided to speak out after, presumably, contemplating WWJD for a couple of days since the news broke. Said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out:

"Today, [Rick] Warren showed true moral courage and stood for what is right and just. We urge other leading pastors and world leaders to stand up and condemn Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill."

I'm sure Besen is pleased Warren is saying the right thing (better late than never). But "True moral courage" is not exemplified by speaking out against something as barbaric and indefensible as this.

If American evangelicals really did have 'true moral courage', they would not be shilling for authoritarian conservatism, discriminating against minorities and generally judging everybody else's morality while their own movement continues to be dominated by carnival barkers, perverted crotch weasels and fraudsters. If they really did have 'true moral courage', society would be better for it and so would their movement. But they ain't.

It comes to something when any godless heathen plucked at random from the street would probably say the Ugandan 'hang the gays' bill was wrong. But a Christian leader and self-appointed moral crusader warrants a special pat on the back from Wayne Besen for doing the obvious? What is this? Morality Special Olympics?

  2. Since when does being against murder and genocide become an act of "true moral courage."

  3. I guess we should ask the Holocaust-ignoring, pedophile-forgiving Vatican about that.
