State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley called the planned Koran burning in Florida "inflammatory" at a briefing Tuesday and said it would put U.S. troops and interests around the world at risk.
David Petraeus has also warned that the stunt will kill Americans and everyone from Hillary Clinton to Angelina Jolie has denounced it. But Terry Jones, pastor of the 50-member Dove World Outreach Center, says not even protests and death threats will deter him.
Why worry?
It doesn't take a genius to figure that average Joes in oppressive Islamist countries will take the Koran burning as an expression of majority opinion and hate us more for it. They won't understand that we protect Jones' right to do this while disagreeing with the act itself because they live in societies where divergence from the norm is an entirely alien concept... where freedom of speech means the freedom to get your testicles electrocuted. They also live in societies where "the word of God" goes and the clergy rule supreme - not secular America where a huckster like Terry Jones can get himself ordained for $6.99 on the Web and start running his mouth like he's frickin' Moses.
I'm sure the smarter bigots who are backing Jones understand this dichotomy well. So these people are clearly using our own system against us and seeking to frame all Americans as enemies of Islam in order to stoke their "holy war".
So there's only one way to solve this: Someone needs to hold a Bible burning event right next door. That way, even Muslims in lock-step Islamist societies, might understand it's nothing personal and anything really does go in our crazy ol' freedom-loving country.

I don't know how to say this without it possibly sounding insultive to the rest of your compatriots, but it is so refreshing to find a wise and enlightened US citizen like yourself for a change! Great blog, Sir. You do a lot to allay the increasing anger and hostility to Americans I've found growing in me over the last few years, so you're working for world peace, without even realising it.

ReplyDeleteThe pitiful thing of it is, 30 yrs ago this would have been a little side bar human interest story at the end of some saturday news program. Today, with all the moronic dull witted ignorant proles needing constant titillation, it becomes big news. Guess who prospers from it all. . . yup, the Christian-Fascist preacher.
