Angling Down

A few weeks ago, Harry Reid looked dead in the water in Nevada. Now he's leading Sharron Angle by 7 points in a recent Mason-Dixon poll.

This seems like evidence to back up my theory (well, OK, Thomas Frank's theory) that Republicans would never get elected if average Americans actually knew what they stood for.

If you disagree, just give me one example of any Republican running on their own platform. Every time they enter the electoral melee, its always in opposition to other ideas - never to promote their own. It's always anti-gay rights/anti-immigration/anti-Socialism/anti-Islam, etc... Everyone knows what they oppose. But no-one really knows what they propose because it would turn off voters in droves.

Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon credits Harry Reid's campaign with beating back the Angle assault. "The race has been all about her, and he's been doing a good job of pounding her."

I'd disagree. Angle has pounded herself by first broadcasting her ridiculous opinions - pro-Scientology, anti-alcohol, anti-abortion even in cases of incest and/or rape, etc. - and then trying to hide them. The electorate, at least those questioned by Mason-Dixon, are clearly not as gullible as she'd hoped.

  1. Such a statement of how the right wing corpo-fascist republicans help their constituency get ahead.
Why do people consistently vote against their best interests?
