Time Wasting & Pedantry

Rand Paul: for a guy who "does not condone racism in any way", he sure has a lot of fans at Storm Front. Just sayin'...

Says The Washington Post:

Two days after becoming the newest symbol of "tea party" politics, Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul of Kentucky thrust himself...into an uncomfortable conversation about the federal government's role in prohibiting racial discrimination.

Paul appeared on MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and, in a long exchange with the liberal host, repeated his belief in a limited government that should not force private businesses to abide by civil rights law.

His statements created an overnight controversy...with Paul thrown on the defensive as party leaders sought to distance themselves from their new nominee's views.

I'm not mad with Rand Paul because he's racist. I, unlike his fans at Storm Front, honestly don't think he is. But I am mad that he's pushing his poseur philosophy as politics and wasting Kentucky's chance to get a functioning Senator in DC for once. The issue ain't racism. The issue is that we have a guy whose head's so far up his own ass he honestly thinks government is the greater of two evils when compared to discrimination. And he's running for office.

At least on paper, I'd agree with Libertarianism too. But to run with it in real life? You'd need to be high. Sure, sign me up for small government. Hell, no government... Sign me up for the laissez-faire, anything-goes program Rand Paul espouses... at least in fantasy world.

But non-fantasy world demands pragmatism, compromise and expects you to yield to reality. We might not like the idea of government, but we need government to protect good people from a**holes. And we need an informed public to protect our democracy from being clogged with poseurs like Rand Paul living out their philosophical ego trips.

Libertarians: grow the f*ck up.
