I'm used to getting hate mail and I welcome it. But the rate of in-bound ranting has spiked recently after I voiced my opinion that the War on Terror is a phony construct and that we're really just suffering the actions of random crazy folk.
Apparently, you can't say that in America because to criticize the mission (said War on Terror) is somehow taken as criticizing the troops themselves. To this cart-before-the-horse, pretzel logic I call bullsh*t.
The 'support the war or we'll accuse you of not supporting the troops' argument sucks. To fetishize the military so much that war is beyond criticism, to never argue against the missions on which our governments choose to squander their lives, is the kind of stuff that's supposed to happen in military dictatorships. Not in America.
To the troops I'd quote the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson: "Ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die". And I can dig that. But to the pols, armchair warriors and hatemailers who happily watch them die for no good reason while yelling at me about not supporting them, I'd give a less literary "f*ck you".

You get hate mail?!
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky! Wish I got hate mail.
Well, technically it's hate mail for my old site that still gets stumbled upon by outraged wingnuts looking for anti-Bush nostalgia to get mad about.
