Arizona Explained

I've always liked Arizona as a place. It's landscape amazes, it's dry heat is so much better than the soaking-wet-heat we've got in Texas. But WTF is going on with its government? Apparently we can blame its unusually high proportion of white geezers who migrate there to live out their twilight years. I defer to Calbearinillinois commenting at TPM:

Most of the Sun City snowbirds are the dying vestiges of the "Greatest Generation", i.e. what today would be trailer trash but because they lived through WWII were able to make enough working in manufacturing and similar blue collar jobs to eventually move to a sunnier climate. The ultimate "I got mine" group, they swing right anytime they get scared they might lose any of their advantages, such as when the economy tanks or non-whites seek rights. So the combo platter of a bad economy, a black president, and an influx of brown folks makes them even nuttier than normal.

I've yet to hear Arizona diagnosed better.

  1. 1. New Mexico is a much more picturesque place than Arizona. Arizona will not be missed with NM so close by.
    2. I don't really enjoy seeing people make such brash and broad sweeping negative remarks about the WWII generation. They are responsible for some of the most remarkable feats of human achievement.

  2. 1. I think NM is prettier but Arizona is awesome looking especially up near Utah.

    2. True that. But there's also a point that they had better opportunities because of the times they lived in. Aside from the war and all that horror, it was much easier to work hard and get ahead back in the day. Now the opportunities and the standards of living for average folks are much lower.
