It's a bizarre double murder case that has much of North Georgia and many people on the web buzzing. Maybe that's because one of the two suspects is the stepfather of a victim, was once her uncle by marriage and fathered a child by her.
That suspect, 40-year-old Jesse James Kilgore, said very little when he appeared before a Dawson County Magistrate Judge late Monday afternoon.
When the magistrate asked Kilgore if he could speak, understand, read and write English, Kilgore replied, "Uh, read and write not too good, but I understand it."
I have nothing to add except sympathy for the stepchild/niece/mom involved. That and to emphasize the difference between redneck and white trash: Redneck is an option, white trash is a socioeconomic situation that is thrust upon you. And, man, it sure does a lot of thrusting in some parts of Georgia.

ReplyDeleteThere is a woman down the road from me who has spent at least a cool million on farm equipment, house remodeling and horses in the past couple years. . . probably more. Seems she married a couple rich guys and now collects huge amounts of alimony and child support.
Well, last night, I was coming in and passed her house while her, her bubba boyfriend and a neighbor were out there by the creek screaming and hollering at each other, making threats, etc. She actually thinks she is high class and isn't white trash, but she has not conciously made the choice not to be such and as a result, she is still nothing but white trash despite her mega wealth.
We all have choices.
Maybe I should refine my thesis. It's like you can take the white trash out of the trailer park but you can't take the trailer park out of the white trash. Unless, of course, you work on it. Kinda like those examples of people working their way out of the ghetto and becoming wealthy. Everyone can do it. Only problem is that you have to work harder to overcome your white trash or ghetto roots and the temptation to give up and become a victim of circumstance is too much for some.
ReplyDeleteRedneck is aspirational whereas white trash is something no-one really wants to be. Hell, even Bush aspired to be a redneck even though he was an ivy league blue blood from New England.
