The Diving Horses of Atlantic City were a popular attraction in the mid 1880s. Sometimes assisted by an electric cattle prod, a horse would dive into a pool of water from as high as 60 feet up.
It's easy to assume Earth was entirely populated by sadistic bastards in old-timey days when diving horses, electric anti-masturbation devices and gin for teething babies were all considered right on.
