Old People

One hundred-year-old Ruth Frith of Australia competes in the women's shot put

I'm not usually a sucker for that wacky news staple 'unusually old people doing unusually young things.' But who could fail to be moved by some old bird doing a record breaking shot put? Of course, there was a slight downside in that she was the only competitor in the 100+ category so the gold was a breeze.

What I always like in old people news stories is how they always buck healthy norms when asked "what do you attribute your longevity to?" Shotputting Ruth Frith is no exception. When asked, she said "Don't eat vegetables, because I never eat vegetables. I know people that like diets that will scream at me, (but) don't eat vegetables. I never have."

Personally, I credit my own longevity to smoking Marlboros, drinking coffee and sitting on my ass all day waiting for a decent hour to crack open a beer. I'm not yet 100-years-old though, so I'll let you know how the regimen turns out.
